On Friday 25th September, the children formally celebrated both the opening of the new classrooms and the school’s 130th anniversary. There were a number of guests invited who were integral to the school build including the architects and project managers along with representatives from local community groups who support the school in a number of ways, as well as past staff and governors.
The children sang a special birthday round to the school and the children in KS2 sang an emotional song for the occasion called 'Believe'.
Mrs Jan Johns cut the ribbon to formally open the new classrooms. Mrs Johns is a previous parent, employee, governor and current volunteer as well as our church warden and has been connected to the school for over 30 years. She spoke to the children about the ways in which the school has altered over the years and how she remembered that the children celebrated the school's centenary by dressing up in Victorian outfits.
After the ribbon had been cut, we moved to the rear of the school to bury two time capsules. Over the last few weeks, the children have been learning about how we celebrate important occasions and prepared some work to go into the time capsules. The work varied from class to class, from including photos, a short video about the school, a special class prayer written for the occasion and pieces of writing about life in school now and aspirations for the future. Mrs Johns started the burying of the time capsules and the prayer written by Class 3 was read.
The children have also been silk painting which has been stretched over large screens and when this is put together makes a beautiful piece of artwork looking similar to a stained glass window. Both the PTA and The Norman Dawson Trust gave £600 each to enable all the children to work with an artist for a week to produce this beautiful piece of artwork - helping the children to put their mark on the new part of the school.
In the afternoon, the children moved into their House Teams and joined together for an afternoon of activities related to celebrations. We had a great day and look forward to the future of our growing and happy school.
